Incident response planning is not just any method, it is more like a blueprint that shows how a company shall respond when a cybersecurity incident happens and what is expected at every level of response. Incident response planning can be seen as a very important piece in cybersecurity risk management puzzle, as the cybersecurity landscape continues to become more complex organisations need such a plan if they want to remain competitive while at the same time being cyber-resilient and reducing the adverse effects of a security breach. In essence, the task of incident response planning is mainly about putting measures into place for dealing with incidents, assigning roles to response teams, setting up communication standards, recording escalation processes, figuring out important systems, and outlining the steps for getting back up to work. Doing all these preparations will give organisations a much more effective way to handle incidents consistently and the ability to carry out operations smoothly during such cyber events;
The major aim of setting up incident response plans is the increase of organisational preparedness for any type of incidents that may happen. Being ready for incidents means that procedures should be written and response process should be reviewed on a regular basis. Doing so enables decision-making during a crisis to be more swift and structured when dealing with an unexpected event, besides that it brings uncertainty to a minimum and gives a sense of confidence.
The other big piece of the puzzle in incident response planning is communication. If everyone understands which part of the communication should be the responsibility of different parts of the organisation then during a cyber incident they would be able to work together more efficiently.
To have a good communication, a company will need to define different levels of communication to be able to coordinate with the technical team leadership staff, the external stakeholders, and regulators when needed. Good communication leads to good incident response.
Another common feature that incident response planning incorporates is periodic testing and review through running different types of simulations and then using these insights to improve their own response plan as the cybersecurity risk changes or new threats emerge. Through these steps of running exercises, measuring performance of response activities, modifying documentation and using experience, an organisation will not be only well-prepared but will also be flexible in facing the cyber threats.
The key benefits that organisations derive from incident response planning are that through these plans, they are better organized prepared can carry out their communication coordination documentation and planning for recovery besides they also can do some improvement on a continual basis. These will be factors contributing to the enhanced level of cyber-resilience and well-managed cyber incidents across today's organisations.
